From my childhood memories of ’80s television, most of it crappy American sotcoms, the one constant throughout was the diner or deli. Whilst the deli in Australia has usually the purveyor of high-end ingredients, quality coffee and expensive cheeses from every corner of the world. Much like the word “fanny”, the exact opposite applies in the States.
Here they specialise in filtered coffee, simple food with the unnatural fluro orange cheese and the types of food that make up the apex of the healty food pyramid.
Illustrated by a cheese sandwich with a side of tomato soup courtesy of the Portland Penny Diner. I now feel the need to have tomato soup with everything.
My other experience within the deli/diner-sphere was a Jewish deli. They had bagels and motza ball soup but not being a practising Jew myself I needed to find something that was more non-Jew.
My breakfast sandwich, containing an omlette, BBQ corned meat and cheese with a small side of hash potatoes.
I know there was some mention of bread in the bible. Both were very nice but two deli meals in two weeks may be my limit?
